Join TdR for our next Virtual Salon, Evangeline Revisited – a behind the scenes look at a brand new work in progress! This Salon is your invitation to look inside the fascinating, enlightening, and often messy process of creating theatre.
TdR is thrilled to be partnering with Penobscot Theatre Company in Bangor, Maine to develop a new play, Je Ne Suis Pas Evangeline (I Am Not Evangeline), premiering in April, 2021. One of the joys of creating a new work like this one is digging into a seemingly familiar topic and finding out how much there is to learn.
With this project, our starting place is Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s epic poem, Evangeline, about a young Acadian woman whose life is upended in the 1755 ethnic cleansing known as Le Grand Derangement.
Evangeline was a huge hit in its day (the mid-1800s) and has earned its place in the canon of American literature. But does it tell the whole story of Francophone people in the northeastern United States? What do our history books leave out? Je Ne Suis Pas Evangeline explores the truth about Maine’s Francophone women — their strength, their dreams, and their resilience.
Please join us on Sunday, March 14 from 3 to 5 p.m. for Evangeline Revisited: Acadian and Franco-American History in Maine. If you’ve never been to a TdR Virtual Salon, you’re in for a treat (think Ted Talk meets happy hour, with a performance or two thrown in for good measure). Step into the Zoom room for scenes, interviews, and a lively online discussion, as you enjoy a signature cocktail/mocktail (we’ll send the recipe!). No French required.
This is a PWYC event, but you can pay as little as $1; a suggested donation of $5-$25 in celebration of our 25th anniversary season is appreciated. Click here to register now!
